About Sleep Yarns

Why deliberately uneventful?

The idea

Most people who struggle to fall asleep aren't tired — they're mentally busy. The mind wants something to do. Left alone it loops: replaying the day, rehearsing tomorrow, solving problems that don't need solving at midnight.

The right kind of story occupies just enough of that mental bandwidth to stop the looping, without providing enough stimulation to keep you awake. Not thrilling, not dramatic — just interesting enough to follow, just calm enough to fade out of.

That's the whole idea behind Sleep Yarns. Stories written to be listened to in the dark.

What "deliberately uneventful" means

Every story in Sleep Yarns is written with the same brief: make it immersive, not exciting. The narrators describe things in careful detail — the texture of a lock gate on an old canal, the way light moves across a hillside at dawn, the sound of rain on a roof tile. Nothing happens. And that's the point.

A good sleep story keeps you present enough that your mind doesn't wander back to your to-do list, but never fires you up enough to keep you awake. The pacing is slow. The sentences are long. The subject matter is chosen for its gentle, unhurried quality — birdwatching, archival work, agricultural rhythms, slow water.

The design philosophy

The app was built around a single rule: by the time a story starts, you shouldn't need to touch your phone again.

  • Dark by default. Deep navy backgrounds, dim text, no bright whites. The app is designed for a phone on a nightstand in a dark room.
  • No accounts, no streaks, no notifications. There's nothing to check, nothing to maintain, no gamification. You're not rewarded for listening every night. The app has no opinion about your habits.
  • Set it and forget it. Choose a story, choose a duration, press play. The volume fades itself. There's nothing to do after that.
  • "I Can't Sleep" button. The home screen has a single large button that starts playing immediately — no browsing, no decisions. It picks from your favourites first, then downloaded stories, so something is always ready.

How the stories are made

Each story is written specifically for Sleep Yarns. They're narrated with a calm, unhurried voice and processed to sit comfortably at low volumes. Ambient soundscapes (rain, wind, fireplace, and others) can be layered beneath any story, and the mix is designed so neither element dominates.

The library grows slowly and deliberately. A new story takes time to write, record, and check properly. The aim is quality over quantity — each one should be worth returning to.
